Doctor’s Hearing Care Initiativedoctor-screener-pen-in-coat

Dear Doctor,

It is well documented that the senior population is at greater risk for depression, and a hearing loss can be a silent contributor. People with a loss gradually begin to withdraw from the things they had once enjoyed, parties, church, or visiting with family and friends. This withdrawal is due to frustration or embarrassment and can be isolating; which contributes to the depression so often seen in patients with a hearing loss.

In fact, if your office sees twenty-one adults age sixty-five or older, seven will have a hearing loss. The majority of these adults will have sensori-neural hearing losses and can only be helped with hearing instruments. In the past year, the new technology of computerized digitally programmable hearing devices has made for an incredible satisfaction rate.

At Hearite, we have the most advanced hearing devices and equipment for auditory assessment available. We know that it is not just hearing but understanding that is most important to you and your patients.

We truly believe that those of us who work with our senior population, want to give our patients the best quality of life possible. Providing hearing healthcare is what Hearite does best and it can positively affect their quality of life. Plus, reduce their frustration and provide the crucial communication your patient require from you, as well as your office staff, by addressing any hearing related issues.

How to Use Your HearPen Screener

doctor-screener-hearpenThe pocket portable HearPen can be used in your office by you or one of your staff. An ordinary quiet exam room provides an acceptable environment for a valid screening. Be sure to check your patient’s ear canals for excessive wax prior to the screening. Verify that the HearPen is working properly by checking someone known to have good hearing. If your patient fails to hear the HearPen in one or both ears, a multi-frequency audiogram is indicated.

The single frequency HearPen emits a 3000 Hz (+/- 15%) pure tone at 35 dB HL (+/- 3dB).

Steps for Use
  1. Place the HearPen directly over the opening of the ear canal with the speaker grille towards the eardrum
  2. Press tightly against the canal opening
  3. Screening is as simple as pressing the clip to produce the tone
  4. Ask your patient to respond by saying “yes” when the tone is heard
  5. Repeat the procedure for the other ear.

Identifying Hearing Loss in Your Office

Today’s improved technology makes hearing screening in the physician’s clinic easy, convenient and quicker than a vision test. In a matter of seconds, a pocket portable HearPen can identify patients who need an audiogram or referral for a hearing evaluation.

*Often, patients with mild to moderate loss deny the fact. However, others who are close to them are more likely to notice the impairment

Which Patients Should be Screened?

Ideally, all of your patients should be screened periodically. Certainly every patient who may be at risk, such as, patients over 50 years of age, or individuals that manifest symptoms in your office.

The Physician’s Role Patients view hearing loss as a medical problem. Therefore, as a physician, you can become a source of information and hope for the hearing impaired. Greater awareness of both the physical and psychological effects of hearing loss on the part of the physician can help your patients enjoy life more fully. A quick simple screening not only reduces the amount of time patients spend in your office, it also encourages them to get the professional help they need.
